Fashion: A Comfort Food Alternative
One of the main attractions at Vogue’s Global Fashion’s Night Out two weeks ago was designer cupcakes. Not the styles on the runways, not the one-night-only sales deals, but the free cupcakes given out by high-end brands, like Club Monaco (whose food truck read “How Sweet It Is To Have a Cupcake On Us”).
It seems that it’s impossible to hold a fashion event these days without offering swanky cupcakes. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not complaining by any means! It just got me thinking…And by “it got me thinking” I mean that I did some “field research” (i.e. ate a whole bunch of cupcakes).
What is it about cupcakes that seems to go so perfectly hand in hand with fashion?
There certainly is something empowering in the notion that the industry so infamous for negative body image is now encouraging women to comfort themselves with sugary sweets.
First, at the Sunset Strip Music Festival Gift Lounge, I “examined” the designer cupcakes offered by Sweet E’s to all the attending celebrities. My findings: cupcakes are sweet and dainty, and most certainly comforting.
Then, at the XCVI Spring 2010 photoshoot, I realized that cupcakes, like fashion, can also be considered works-of-art. Hanging from a tree or sitting on a table, cupcakes make joyful and stylish accessories.
Alas, as much as I condone this fashionable cupcake trend, perhaps our fashion should be celebrated in the same regard, as a low-calorie, fat-free stylish, dainty and sweet comfort food.
Bon appétit!
